Knitted Beret...Complete..I think...

I was so excited to have finished my hat in 2 days.

Here are the modifications that I made.

1. I added a 2X2 ribbing to the band, using a size 6 needle, because 2X2 ribbing is the stretchiest, and you get the best results when you go down 2 needle sizes.

2. The pattern called for 4 inches of stitches before the decreases. I decided to do 5 inches, because I wanted to make sure my ears were covered.

Now, my question for you is, does it look too big? I feel like I need to have some dreadlocks with this hat on. It just feels so big to me. Should I frog the top, and reduce it back to 4 inches before the decreases? Be honest. I will love you for it.

I got to admit. It does look a little too big on you. Like you should have more hair or something. I say reduce it some.

I think it is too big. It looks like alot of propped up yarn sitting on top of your head. This is why I like MB's. It's more fitted and I think that is what you want because you want your ears covered. I say reduce back.

Shameka, it looks like someone got the Pillsbury Dough Boy's hat and deflated it then gave it to you. Rip back! :)

I agree. The colors look cute on you but the hat is a bit smurfy. See ya at frog pond.

I have to agree with all the ladies before me, it's a great color but it needs a bit of a diet.

Nice hat. It will be even nicer when you rip it back, so that it fits you properly. Go ahead and knock it out! It'll be fast. Looking forward to seeing your new and improved beret.

I must say, that knitting friends are the best friends to have. I really felt like it was a mushroom hat. Shoot, if I spend $20 on a skein of yarn, the hat better flatter me!!! Thank you for the honest and brutal opinions. I really appreciate it. I will rip back those stitches today.

Deb... I wish MB posted her pattern already, then I wouldn't be in this predicament. Or... If I had just followed tthe pattern to begin with, and had some real discipline... LOL!!

Yvonne.. the Pillsbury dough boy comment had me rolling on the floor laughing. I think I want to make some cinnamon buns now.. LOL!!

Tawana, and Necia...if you ever want a hat to cover the luscious locks, I have got a pattern for you...LOL!!

Chante...I loved watching the smurfs growing up.

Nancy.. see what happend when I try to knit without having a B&N meeting in two weeks? I'm a mess.

i love the color of the beret, but i agree with making it a smaller/thinner size. i'm loving how the yarn accentuates your hair color though!

OK. Frog it. My hat was 84sts, 2x2 rib for 1". Next make increases by *k4,m1* repeat to end (105 sts.) Then change to lrgr needles & knit to 3" (for my daughters I knit to 4" & we like that it covers her ears better. Her head is bigger than mine.) Then you evenly decrease by *k15, k2tog* to end of round(98sts). K evenly for 4 rounds. Decrease rnd : *k14, k2tog* repeat to end (91sts). K evenly for 4 rounds. Decrease rnd: *K13, k2tog* repeat to end (84sts). K evenly for 3 rnds. Decrease rnd: *k12,k2tog* repeat(77sts). K evenly for 2 rnds. Decrease rnd: *K11, k2tog* repeat to end (70sts). K evenly for 2 rnds. Decrease rnd: *k10, k2tog* repeat to end (63sts). K evenly for 1 round. Decrease rnd: *k9, k2tog* repeat to end (56sts). K evenly for 1 rnd. Decrease rnd: *k8,k2tog* repeat to end (49sts). K evenly 1 rnd. At this point, continue to decrease 7 sts. every rnd in manner established until you have 7 sts. left. Pull yarn through all stitches several times to bind off.

Oh, forgot to tell you I blocked our hats onto a 10" dinner plate. Spritz w/ water & let air dry to create beret edge.

I really love the yarn and the colorway. Once you rip it back it will be perfect!

Oooo, cute beret! The colors are great. Berets are hard for size, though, aren't they? If everyone else says make it smaller, then I'll agree...but then is that a tam?? Sorry I'm no help, LOL.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, too!

I love the colors but I do agree that it's a little too much hat. Maybe you won't have to frog it all, just down the excess on top. I think your handiwork is beautiful though.

First, I've got to comment on the color. PERFECT. I'm sorry but I'm inclined to agree with everybody. You should rip back a bit. Since I'm so late in reading this, you've probably already done that and are wearing it now!

Initially I was blinded by the gorgeous colors. So perfect for you. Berets are hard hats to get just right. It may be a bit big, but if you slouched the hat toward the back it wouldn't be so Smurfy/Dough Boy-y. I'm a lazy knitter so I would probably just wear it as is, but that's just lazy me. Either way I love it!

I like the colors. Did you go down in size as what everyone suggested? Can't wait to see the finished project.

Knit on!
